Sailing events volunteers' development program is launched by St.Petersburg Yacht Club
St.Petersburg Yacht Club events are always complemented by volunteers. They played crucial role in big events organization of the Sailing Academy, Historical shipyard "Poltava" as well. All the largest Club's events, such as Extreme Sailing Series, Nord Stream Race, World Match Racing Tour и Sailing Champion League have always relayed much on volunteers' assistance.
"This is well known that volunteers' employment is always demanding for the organizing committee – the personnel must be equipped and trained – St.Petersburg Yacht Club head of projects Elena Solovyeva comments. – But the volunteers role is essential as they help to create that special atmosphere of friendship and hospitality, they help to convey core ideas of the events such as regatta, races or festivals. Already for decades St.Petersburg Yacht Club promotes maritime traditions, heritage and fair competition as well as enhances the city of St.Petersburg image as best European sports destination".
In 2018 Elena Solovyeva proposed to review all skills and practices of inviting, training and inclusion of volunteers in the organizational teams. In 2019 four events were selected to start with new volunteers' program. These are the largest Baltic offshore Nord Stream Race, pan-European clubs' competition Sailing Champion League, National Sailing League and RS:X Youth World Championship. Generally around 100 of volunteers are expected to be invited, trained and added to the organizational teams for those four events.
The personnel will play active role in hospitality and technical support services of the events. Also special group of Liaison officers will be created. This kind of personnel was developed in The Tall Ships' Races, Cutty Sark, Operation Sail. Liaison officer is a volunteer that assists each of the competing crews and helps the crews to feel welcome in the foreign cities. Also Liaison officers communicate between the org committee and the crews.
Sailing events volunteers' development program starts in February 2019. There will be invitations circulating in the Universities and youth sailing teams. Introduction meeting will be held in March. There all prospects will learn more about the regattas, qualifications demanded and bonuses expected. In April-May all volunteers invited will be trained with special unique program that includes sail practices as well. Successive trainees will be invited to the main sailing events of the summer. Season results will be analyzed in fall 2019 and based on the summary the training program and criteria will be formed for the next 3 years period.
